When Dante was young, she fell in love with a mysterious alchemist. Following his example, she learned everything she could about the science and set out to help him create the Philosopher's Stone. However, at the time of its creation, her alchemist husband, Hohenheim, almost died, and she saved his life by using the Stone's power to bind his soul to the body of another man.
From that day on, the couple continued to use the Stone to ensure their own immortality, stealing the bodies of younger humans to prolong their own existence. However, after their only son died of mercury poisoning, they decided the Stone could also be used to carry out a successful human transmutation, but only succeeded in creating a Homunculus, or artificial human, bearing his face.
Regretting his hasty actions, Hohenheim left Dante and their Homunculus child behind, filling her with both pain and resentment. Since then, Dante has focused on nothing but getting him back, raising up an army of Homunculi to aid her in that task. She continues to steal the bodies of young girls to preserve her beauty, and is obsessed with being in control of not only her own life, but everyone else's, as well. She is a master of many different identities, and is used to having her way, no matter what.
